WC26 check: Mexico City.

Across our North-American city guide we cover all 16 venues of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This one: Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — 87,000 seats, 5 WC26 matches. City, nightlife, food and football, in 3 minutes.

City

Mexico City is football's quiet world capital. 22 million people, 2,240 metres above sea level, a city that never sleeps — and on June 11, 2026, it kicks off the World Cup. Coyoacán feels like a village, Roma Norte like Berlin-Mitte with tacos, the historic centre like a UNESCO film set.

Nightlife

Roma Norte and Condesa are your first stops. Mezcal bars like Bósforo, cocktail names like Licorería Limantour (World's Top 50). Coyoacán moves slower; Garibaldi has mariachis until 4 a.m. Local rule: don't start too early — things kick off after 11 p.m.

Food

Tacos al pastor at a street stand on Calle de Bolívar — €1 a piece, the city's foundation. Breakfast: chilaquiles at Café El Cardenal. Evenings: Pujol (World's Top 20) or Contramar for an insider's lunch. Never tap water, always limonada.

Football

The Azteca is sacred ground — Maradona's "Hand of God" 1986, Pelé's 1970. Home of Club América. The opener on June 11, 2026 starts the World Cup here, where it has twice been decided. Kickoff 18:00 local (CET +8h).
