Why strategy matters
In every prediction round there are three kinds of tippers: those who always pick "2-1 for the favourite" (trend followers), those who pick on "gut feel" without a system, and those who follow a deliberate strategy.
The third group wins above average. Here are the six most successful strategies from 10 years of tipping data (4 tournaments in the 2016 era + Euro 2024 analysis).
Strategy 1: The Consensus Maximizer
Who: Risk-averse tippers who "just don't want to finish last".
How: Always pick the market consensus result. With Premium it's shown top right on the tip field. With Free you have to estimate from Pinnacle/Sky odds.
Expected outcome: Top 30%, rarely top 10%, rarely bottom.
Best for: Office pools where you just want to not be embarrassed.
Strategy 2: The Contrarian
Who: Tippers in large rounds (50+ players) where consensus tippers cannibalize each other.
How: In matches where the market has a clear favourite (≥60%), pick the draw or the underdog. Three or four such hits per tournament are enough for top 5%.
Expected outcome: High variance. Either top 5 or bottom 20.
Best for: Large prediction rounds where courage is rewarded.
Strategy 3: The Score Specialist
Who: Tippers in rounds with bonus points for exact scorelines.
How: Memorize your tournament's score distribution. At WC 2022 the most frequent score was 1-0 (15% of matches), followed by 1-1 (12%) and 2-1 (11%). 2-0 (10%) and 0-0 (8%) complete the top 5.
Tip 1-0, 1-1 or 2-1 in 70% of your matches — and use 2-0 for clear favourites against clear underdogs. The bonus point for the exact score beats any tendency pick.
Best for: Rounds with aggressive bonus schemes (Kicktipp Premium or tiptilldone "Score Hunter").
Strategy 4: The Joker Strategist
Who: Tippers in rounds with a "joker" mechanic (doubling points on one match per round).
How: Do NOT put the joker on the match with the clearest favourite. Put it on the match with the maximum-consensus underdog, where you're sure the underdog wins. If 80% of the round tips "Brazil 2-0" and you tip "Morocco 1-0" with joker and Morocco wins 1-0 → you cash in double from a situation where everyone else gets zero.
Best for: Rounds with joker (in tiptilldone V1 as a Premium feature).
Strategy 5: The KO-Stage Maximizer
Who: Tippers who are mediocre in the group stage and need the KO stage to catch up.
How: Tip conservatively in the group stage (consensus-oriented). Save your multiplier strategies for KO. In tiptilldone KO matches are scored 2x (R32), 3x (R16/QF — TBD), 4x (SF), 5x (Final). A known pattern: 12 bad group-stage tips can be neutralized by one exact QF tip.
Best for: Tippers who study their group-stage data and save their energy.
Strategy 6: The AI-Plus-Gut Hybrid
Who: Premium users with AI Picks access.
How: Take the AI Pick as default tip. But in 3–5 matches per group stage, deliberately deviate — when you know something the AI doesn't ("My Sturm Graz friend told me Bayindir is injured").
This hybrid strategy performed best in our Euro 2024 test round — better than pure AI, better than pure human.
Best for: Tipping pros who understand the model and correct it deliberately.
Which strategy suits you?
| You are… | Best strategy | |---|---| | Risk-averse, office pool | Strategy 1 | | Bold, large round | Strategy 2 | | Score-oriented | Strategy 3 | | Playing with joker | Strategy 4 | | Bad in group stage | Strategy 5 | | AI-friendly, tips a lot | Strategy 6 |
Whatever the strategy — you need one. "Gut feel" without a system is the worst option of all. You lose to Strategy 1, Strategy 3 and Strategy 6 — systematically.
